How Truck Drivers Can Unlock More Job Opportunities After a Clearinghouse Violation

I spoke with a driver recently who was already working but wanted to move into a better CDL job. Like many drivers, she had a Clearinghouse violation, completed Steps 1–5 of the FMCSA Return-to-Duty process, and was looking to increase her options.
My advice to her was simple but powerful:
👉 Stack your credentials now, so you’re ready when the right opportunity comes.
Why Credentials Matter After a Clearinghouse Violation
If you’ve ever failed a DOT drug test, refused a DOT test, or gone through the return-to-duty CDL process, you already know that job opportunities can feel limited. Some companies will not hire drivers with a CDL prohibited status history—but others will.
The key is to make yourself more valuable by adding endorsements and certifications that open doors.
Credentials That Create More CDL Job Opportunities
Here are the top three credentials I recommend for drivers trying to get return-to-duty jobs or expand into higher-paying CDL positions:
1. TWIC Card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
Cost: $125
Issued by: TSA (Transportation Security Administration)
Purpose: Allows you to access and work at ports, maritime facilities, and secure areas
Why it matters: If you live in or near a port area, many companies require a TWIC card just to consider you for a driving job. Without it, you’re cutting yourself off from an entire sector of opportunities.
2. Hazmat Endorsement
Required for hauling hazardous materials
Increases pay and job flexibility
Especially valuable for SAP drivers who need to show employers they’re serious about growing in the industry
3. Passenger Endorsement
Opens up jobs with bus companies, shuttle services, and passenger transport
Many passenger carriers hire drivers who have completed their RTD drug test and SAP program, giving you a strong path back to work.
Real Talk: Why This Matters
The driver I spoke with already had a steady job. But as I reminded her:👉 “Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.”
The trucking industry is competitive. If you want to get out of prohibited status, keep your CDL active, and find better-paying jobs, you have to plan ahead. Stacking credentials ensures you’re not limited when the right job opens up.
